Malawi leaders @ 17th CII-Exim Bank Conclave in India



A delegation of over 30 members comprising Hon. Mark Katsonga Phiri, M.P, Minister of Trade & Industry, Hon. Ms. Abida Sidik Mia, M.P., Minister for Water & Sanitation and Hon. Madalitso Kambauwa Wirima, M.P., Deputy Minister for Agriculture of Republic of Malawi attended 17th CII-Exim Bank Conclave in New Delhi from 19-20 July 2022. The Conclave was held under the theme “Creating Shared Future”. It was organised by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and EXIM Bank of India in partnership with Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI) and Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Government of India. High Commission wins the Best International Exhibitor at Malawi International Trade Fair



The High Commission of India participated at the 32nd Malawi International Trade Fair held form 28th July to 7th August 2022 at the Chichiri Trade Fair Grounds, Blantyre. Over 20 Indian companies including TATA, Ashok Leyland, Kirloskar, Godrej, Mahindra, Shakti Pumps, Genus Batteries and Invertors, Luminous batteries and Invertors and Jaquar Bathroom Fittings, participated and displayed Made in India  products at the India Pavilion. H.E. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, President of Republic of Malawi who inaugurated the Trade Fair also visited the India Pavilion. India Pavilion was also declared the ‘Best International Exhibitor’ and the award was presented by H.E. Lazarus Chakwera.



76th Independence Day Celebrations


On August 15, 2022, High Commission of India celebrated 76th Independence Day. High Commissioner S. Gopalakrishnan hoisted the National Flag and the Hon'ble Rastrapatiji’s address on the eve of India's 76th Independence Day was played. A large number of members of Indian diaspora and friends of India attended the event enthusiastically. 



High Commissioner hosted Malawi Chess team 


The High Commissioner of India hosted Malawi Chess team which participated at the 44th Chess Olympiad which was held in Chennai from 28 July to 10 August, 2022.



ITEC Day 2022


The ITEC Day 2022 was celebrated on 15th September 2022 at the High Commission. The celebration was graced by Hon. Ms. Abida Sidik Mia, Minister of Water and Sanitation. The celebration was attended by a large number of ITEC alumni (both Civilian and Defence) and Senior Government officials of the Government of Malawi. Hon. Mr. Patrick Bandawe, Member of Parliament and Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on International Relations, Hon. Mr. Francis Belekanyama, Member of Parliament and an ITEC alumni, Lt. General Paul Valentino Phiri, Deputy Commander of the Malawi Defence Forces and Mr. Blessings Chilabade, Secretary for Human Resource Management and Development were among the guests who attended the event.



Hindi Diwas 2022


High Commission celebrated Hindi Diwas 2022 on 18th September 2022 at the Chancery premises. Members of Indian diaspora, Indian nationals living in Malawi and families of the High Commission officials took part in the event. On the occasion, competitions such as Poetry Recitation, Essay writing, Hindi Speech etc. for both children and adults, were organized. The event was organized to promote Hindi and to create interest in Hindi language.



Mission’s Community outreach



As part of its outreach programme, the High Commission organized a Consular Camp in Mzuzu on 24th September, 2022. Mission rendered Passport and other Consular Services to the members of Indian diaspora living in the northern region of Malawi.

High Commissioner meeting with Indian Community


High Commissioner met the office bearers of various Indian Community Associations on 28th July 2022 in Blantyre. He briefed the members on various developments that are taking place in India and also the activities being carried out by the High Commission in Malawi .



Blood donation camp by Indian community



Malawi Telugu Association (Mata), Lilongwe,  organised a Blood Donation Camp on 24th September, 2022 at Sol Farm along the Lilongwe-Mchinji Road. The camp attracted over 30 donors.

Hon’ble Droupadi Murmu takes oath as 15th President of India 


On 25th July 2022, Hon’ble Droupadi Murmu took oath of office as the 15th President of India and created history by being the first tribal head of State and the second woman to occupy the country’s highest constitutional post. Prior to becoming the President, Hon’ble Droupadi Murmu was the Governor of Odisha. Read more 


India at the Commonwealth Games 2022 


From July 28 to August 8, 2022 nearly 200 Indian athletes competed for medals across 16 different sports at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham. Indian athletes won 61 medals including 22 Gold, 16 silver and 23 bronze.Read more 


Over 60 million selfies with Indian flag uploaded on 'Har Ghar Tiranga' website


More than sixty million selfies with the Indian flag were uploaded on the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' website as Union Culture Minister G. Kishan Reddy asserted that the entire nation came together to make the campaign a success. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had given a call on July 22 to join the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' movement by hoisting or displaying the national flag at homes. Grand celebrations were held at the Red Fort to mark the 76
th Independence Day as part of the 'Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav' with Prime Minister Modi sharing the road map for the next 25 years—'Amrit Kaal'. Read more 


 Apple plans manufacturing iPhone 14 in India


Apple Inc plans to start manufacturing iPhone 14 in India about two months after the product's initial release in China. The company has been working with suppliers to ramp up production in India and shorten the lag in manufacturing new iPhones from the typical six to nine months for previous launches, the report said citing people familiar with the matter. India launches new aircraft carrier INS Vikrant 


India commissioned its first home-built aircraft carrier on September 2, 2022 as it seeks to counter regional rival China's much larger and growing fleet, and expand its own indigenous shipbuilding capabilities. The INS Vikrant, whose name is a Sanskrit word for "powerful" or "courageous," is India's second operational aircraft carrier, joining the Soviet-era INS Vikramaditya that it purchased from Russia in 2004 to defend the Indian Ocean and Bay of Bengal. 


The new 262-meter (860-foot) carrier, designed by the Indian navy and built at the Cochin shipyard in southern India, was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as part of the country's commemoration of 75 years of independence from British rule. Read more

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has expressed happiness over the recognition of Indian Football player, Sunil Chhetri as third highest scoring active men’s international player. 44th Chess Olympiad 2022 held in Chennai



The 44th FIDE Chess Olympiad was held at the Four Points by Sheraton Mahabalipuram Resort and Convention Centre in Mamallapuram or Mahabalipuram, a United Nation Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) heritage site near Chennai from 29th July to 10th August, 2022. This was the first time the Chess Olympiad was being hosted in India and the first time in Asia after 30 years. The event saw participation of 188 teams representing 186 national federations in open section for Hamilton Russell cup and 162 representing 160 federations in women’s section for the Vera Menchik cup. The 44th Chess Olympiad was inaugurated on July 28 at the Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai by Prime Minister Narendara Modi. For the first time, India won Bronze medal in both Open and Women sections. India also won the Gaprindashvili Cup for becoming the best overall federation as per performance.



Rashtrapati Ji attends State Funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II


Hon’ble Rashtrapati ji Droupadi Murmu attended funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in London on September 19, 2022 at Westminster Abbey. A day of state mourning was observed on September 11, 2022 in India "as a mark of respect" for the death of Queen Elizabeth. 



India Climbs To 40th Rank In WIPO's Global Innovation Index



In another positive development, India has climbed to the 40th rank in the Global Innovation Index (GII) of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), a leap of 41 places in seven years. Switzerland, the United States, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands are the world’s most-innovative economies, according to WIPO’s 2022 GII with China on the threshold of the top 10. Other emerging economies are also showing consistently strong performance, including India and Turkey, both of which enter the top 40 for the first time. Talking about Central and Southern Asia, India is leading the region and reached the top 40, after making it into the top 50 in 2020. India is the innovation leader in the lower middle-income group, WIPO said in a statement.



PM releases wild Cheetahs in Kuno National Park


On September 17, 2022, Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi released wild Cheetahs - which had become extinct from India - in Kuno National Park. Cheetahs - brought from Namibia - are being introduced in India under Project Cheetah, which is world's first inter-continental large wild carnivore trans location project. Out of the eight Cheetahs there are five female and three male Cheetahs. Read more.


PM Modi Inaugurates World Dairy Summit 2022


Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the International Dairy Federation’s World Dairy Summit (IDF WDS) 2022 at the India Expo Center and Mart in Greater Noida. Prime Minister Modi also visited the local exhibition. At the event, the prime minister said the dairy sector’s potential would not only boost the rural economy, but would also be an important source of livelihood for millions of people around the world.



PM Narendra Modi pays tribute to Former Japanese PM Shinzo Abe



PM Modi attended state funeral of former Japanese PM Shinzo Abe in Japan on September 27, 2022. PM in his tweet in Japanese stated, "When I visited Tokyo earlier this year, I had no idea that I would be returning for Prime Minister Abe's state funeral" and added he was a "great leader, a rare person". India at UNGA



On September 24, 2022, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that while in the 20th century, India was one of the poorest nations, it stood proudly as the 5th biggest economy in the world at the moment. During his address in New York, Jaishankar said, “India today envisions itself as a developed country by 2047, the 100th year of its independence.” Read more 



Only PM Modi can broker peace between Ukraine, Russia: Mexico at UN


Mexico has proposed to the United Nations to set up a committee that would include India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Pope Francis, and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to mediate permanent peace between Russia and Ukraine. The proposal was put forward by Marcelo Luis Ebrard Casaubón, the Foreign Minister of Mexico, while participating in a UN Security Council debate on Ukraine in New York. This came days after Modi, who met Putin on the sidelines of the 22nd meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Uzbekistan's Samarkand, told the Russian leader that "today's era is not of war". The Indian Prime Minister's remarks have been welcomed by the western world including the United States, France and the United Kingdom. Read more 


India to assume Presidency of the G20 in December 2022



India will assume the presidency of the G20 for one year starting December 1, 2022. India will host over 200 G20 meetings across the country beginning December 2022. India will retain the presidency until November 30, 2023. The G20 presidency keeps on rotating every year with every year among its members. The country holding the presidency, together with the previous and next presidency-holder, forms the ‘Troika’. “This would be the first time when the troika would consist of three developing countries and emerging economies, providing them a greater voice,” the MEA said in its release. Indonesia holds the current presidency and India alongside Italy and Indonesia formed the ‘Troika’ to ensure continuity of the G20 agenda. As Indonesia finishes hosting the G20 summit this year in Bali in November, the new Troika will include Indonesia, India and Brazil. Read more
