The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Government of India, and the University of Malawi in Zomba signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 29 September 2025 for setting up the first Chair of Indian Studies at the University of Malawi.
The signatories of the MoU were H.E. Amararam Gujar, High Commissioner of India in Malawi on behalf of ICCR, and Prof. Samson Sajidu, Vice Chancellor of the University of Malawi, Zomba.
The MoU will remain in force for five years. Under this MoU, ICCR, in consultation with the University of Malawi, will appoint the first Indian Chair (Professor) in Indian Studies (Political Science) at the University. The visiting Professor will contribute to the academic life of the University through teaching and related research activities.
The establishment of the ICCR Chair of Indian Studies at the University of Malawi marks a significant step towards enhancing academic knowledge, building institutional linkages, and raising awareness about India. This initiative will further strengthen people-to-people ties between India and Malawi.
Furthermore, the ICCR Chair will support the University of Malawi’s efforts towards internationalisation, aimed at promoting intercultural exchange and academic collaboration among faculty and students.
